Five construction workers killed in Mexico landslide
28 de Mayo de 2009 11:11

Mexico City, May 28 (EFE)- At least five Mexican construction workers were killed in a landslide while digging a ditch by a hill in the central town of Huehuetoca, officials said.

A spokesman for the central state of Mexico's state security agency, or ASE, told Efe that rescue teams had recovered the bodies of five workers but were unaware if more people were buried underneath the tons of earth.

He added that the tragedy occurred Wednesday at the Villa del Rey residential community in that town, some 40 kilometers from the Mexican capital.

Local media said that at least seven construction workers were digging a 30-meter-long ditch for the purpose of later constructing a retaining wall when the hill gave way, apparently the result of the land having been weakened by recent heavy rains.

The ASE spokesman said that civil protection personnel and rescue teams had arrived at the site of the accident to remove the earth with heavy machinery and determine if more people are buried underneath.

He added that state prosecutors also were at the scene to gather information and open an investigation into the cause of the landslide. EFE jrm/mc MEX44.
